Beer and Blog is thrilled to have Burk Jackson, volunteer superhero and talented photographer, to come to this Friday’s Beer and Blog to chat up his wonderful non-profit CreativeCares http://creativecares.org/. It’s sort of a casual dating service for non-profits who are looking for mutually satisfying relationships with volunteer creatives and techies to build websites, develop digital marketing strategies, and create logos for them. No strings attached, and everyone’s left with warm-and-fuzzy memories.

It works like this: CreativeCares partners with non-profits in need of creative and technical services worldwide and matches professionals who wish to volunteer their expertise with organizations who need their help. Volunteers are needed both locally (the Right Brain Initiative, Habitat for Humanity, and the ReBuilding Portland) and internationally (the Disability Aid Abroad program which works to improve the lives of people living in developing countries).

With so many cash-strapped non-profits in need our help in crafting their stories, planning their social media marketing campaigns, and building databases for their online community portals, CreativeCares is currently looking for several volunteers expertise in:

The Software Summit in December was a milestone event to chart the course of a strategic plan aimed at helping the Software Cluster thrive. At that event, we announced the formation of three networks in response to industry feedback. Each of these networks is now building tangible deliverables to further support the growth of Portland’s software industry.

On Wednesday April 6, 2011, you are invited to attend a reception where we will launch another significant new initiative that will drive economic development within the Software cluster: the Portland 100. Please join me and many of your industry peers as Nitin Khanna, CEO of MergerTech and former CEO and founder of Saber, rolls out the program. The program will also include a recap of the PDX11 Unconference and Hackathon at Portland State University April 1-2 and a brief update on progress of our various networks.

The white owl is closing for a private event so we are moving to the Green Dragon

Stumptown Syndicate, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit that oversees events like WhereCamp Portland, Ignite Portland, BarCamp Portland, and Open Source Bridge, is having a Happy Hour gathering to bring together Portland's ever-growing tech community. Based on the book by the same name, this card game allows players to attempt to design a new service with privacy in mind. Use tactic cards to protect information and prevent violations, and ultimately, avoid the consequences on your product when it is released. Play cooperatively (and try to earn 'not consequences' for the team) or competitively (and try to earn less consequences than other players).

The game was developed by R. Jason Cronk, author of "Strategic Privacy by Design". He spoke to our group about privacy by design (PbD) back in May of 2017 and is back in town for another visit. Come out for an evening of fun with other privacy-minded people, and test your skills at designing with privacy in mind!

Speaker bio:

With more than fifteen years of experience in the Information Technology industry and as a licensed attorney in Florida, Robert Jason Cronk is a creative and analytical thinker, able to traverse the realms of business, law, and technology. In 2004, while working in the information security department of Verizon, Mr. Cronk decided to make his long standing personal interest in information privacy a career choice. In 2006, he entered Florida State University School of Law where he focused his research on privacy law issues, including authoring a white paper on the intersection of privacy and public records for the Florida First Amendment Foundation. After graduating, with honors, he earned his CIPP/US, was admitted to practice in Florida and has become an active member of the privacy professionals community through his involvement in the International Association of Privacy Professionals. He has since been awarded the Certified Information Privacy Technologist (CIPT), Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) and Fellow of Information Privacy designations by the IAPP. In October of 2018, he released his first book, "Strategic Privacy by Design" and has developed a corresponding game.
